Aleksa and I set out to traverse the Franconia Ridge from Lafayette to the Flume, starting here up past Greenleaf Hut. At this point, we realized that Aleksa's overmitts were in the car.
But, cowering behind Lafayette, and aided by an improvisation, we decided to continue anyway.
Beyond this long ridge traverse, following Lincoln, we dropped down to Liberty Springs to camp.
As predicted, the weather was even more intense on Sunday. Here's astronaut Aleksa before her first attempt at traversing above treeline on Liberty. After being reduced to all fours, we retreated but regrouped in the trees, then continued up, over, and for several hours to reach the Flume.
Back in trees, we recuperated with cheese and eggs and hugs.
The trail down from the Flume was a more typical White Mountains river-of-ice than had been our ascent to Lafayette.
It was becoming a long day,
but Aleksa remained proud of her dorky, improvised bag overmitts.
Icy tears of joy.
It's a long traverse down to the trailhead, but the crux of the trip may have been the hitchhike back to our car.
